I am Mrs Louise Ankers, Headteacher of the Hafod Federation which consists of Gwerynymyndd CP School and Ysgol y Waun. I qualified as a teacher in 1998 and started my career in a very large primary school in Manchester. After 5 years there, teaching Year 2 and then Year 4, I was appointed as Foundation Phase Leader in Penarlag Primary School. This was a very exciting time in Wales for Primary Education with the introduction of the Foundation Phase Curriculum. After successfully setting up an Early Years Unit and completing various leadership qualifications I was appointed as Headteacher of Ysgol y Waun in 2008. Teaching for 50% of the week and being headteacher was a challenge. However, I loved being in the classroom, seeing Nursery and Reception progress daily and I got to know all the children and families so well. As Ysgol y Waun grew my teaching commitment reduced and in 2017 we were approached by Flintshire County Council to federate our school with Gwernymynydd CP. This was another new challenge and one I embraced. Three years on and I can see how far we have travelled. There are so many benefits of becoming a federation and school improvement is at the centre of everything. I am very fortunate to have strong staff in both schools. When I am not working I love to sit and relax with my husband and our dog, Cherry. Holidays, families and Chester Races are things I look forward to.

Choosing a school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make and your child is about to take one of the most important steps of their life, as they begin school for the first time.
Here at Ysgol y Waun, we think of ourselves as one big family. Our main aim in Foundation Phase therefore, is to make the transition from home to school a smooth one. In providing a happy, caring and stimulating environment, we will help your child discover the joy and excitement of learning as we introduce them to new skills and concepts. We are able to offer individualised support for you and your child in their learning journey.
Our aim is to foster and create a caring and stimulating learning environment which is conducive to the personal and social development of each child. Every child at Ysgol y Waun is special and we get to know each and everyone of them very well during their time with us. We track and measure progress of each individual learner carefully, expect excellent behaviour and gain high standards of achievement.
We regard the partnership between home, school and the community in the highest esteem; we all want the very best for the youngest members of our community. We encourage sharing, caring, respect and responsibility. We will do our best to stimulate and challenge your child and ask for your support in all aspects of school life. We are here to support you and your child through their primary school journey.
